January and February have been eventful months for Bon Accord’s restoration.
Motion Both coupling / crank rods were completed and fitted enabling a rolling test to be carried out through several cycles of rotation. This demonstrated complete freedom of motion and smooth operation. Valve timing has since been carried out and both steam chest covers bolted into place with valve glands packed. Cab Work is also continuing on fitting out the cab ( recently mounted on the frames ) with anchor bolts and doors being mounted. Work on refurbishing the boiler's firehole door linkages is also progressing well. Boiler - Pressure Testing Jan 15th saw the successful hydrotest / strength test ( 210 psig ) of the refurbished boiler at Chatham Steam followed on 31st Jan by the equally successful steam test ( 140 psig ). Both tests were attended by Society members and witnessed / accepted by the Insurance Engineers. The boiler was cleared for transport back to Aberdeen having since arrived on Sat 10th Feb. Altogether a fantastic start to the year giving great impetus to the Project. Congratulations to all concerned !
